In September we took our first camping trip in Napa. We stayed at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. What a great experience and location. This camping was a little different from what we usually do. Our usual spots include a lake or river and stay near the camp the whole week. This location gave us an opportunity to explore the Napa Valley and do some wine tasting.
It was an easy drive from Marin County on a Friday afternoon. We were able to get camp set up and have dinner cooked before the sun went down. Our site was large with plenty of room for both of our tents.
The next day we did some exploring in Napa. Our exploration started at the other end of the campground. We drove the truck to the far side of the campground to the trailhead that led to Bale Grist Mill. It was a relatively easy mile hike to the mile. It is an amazing mill. If you get the chance to visit the area, I highly recommend it. We happened to be fortunate and visited the mill when they were having their heritage day. We were able to get a free guided tour around the mill. It is amazing how much people were able to accomplish in the 1850's without the technology we have today. Following our visit to the mill, we heading to St Helena and had a wonderful lunch on the patio at Farmstead. After our delicious meal, we explored the garden wishing our vegetable garden had done that good this year. We then finish our day back at camp relaxing by the campfire. It was a great Saturday.
Our camping adventure continued the next day when we took our girls to a castle for a tour and wine tasting. Yes, I said a castle. It was amazing and the girls were engaged throughout the tour. Our daughters' favorite parts of the tour were wondering down the many passageways, the torture chamber and the wine tasting room where they were treated to grape juice and chocolate. They were pretty impressed with all of the animals outside of the castle as well.
The relaxing weekend ended with an easy drive home. It was a wonderful way to explore the Napa Valley. We can not wait to do it again!
